2/ an attachment relationship. It's one of the three necessary pillars of a therapeutic alliance or working alliance & essential to all psychotherapy. The pillars are:
1️⃣ attachment
2️⃣ mutual agreement about the purpose of therapy
3️⃣ mutual agreement about the methods to be used
3/ The word "attachment" has positive connotations for most people. The word "dependency" has pejorative connotations. It makes a difference how we speak about it.
We live in a time when meaningful connections to others have broken down. There are people living their lives
4/ meaningful connection to anyone. It's one of the evils of contemporary society. For many patients, meaningful psychotherapy means restoring a damaged capacity for relational connection. That must being in the therapy relationship itself. It is a therapeutic milestone when
5/ such a person is able to form an emotionally meaningful attachment to the therapist. The capacity for human connection grows from there.
Good therapy fosters healthy attachment, not "dependency."
We need to be careful how we discuss therapy in public spaces. Words matter.
