Yes ancient Indians knew the earth is round. That is why Garhapatya hearth (Vedic fire altar, Agni) which represents the world is always a circle.
The Ahavaniya hearth that represents the Heaven is a square.

It is also for this reason that the square is the fundamental form in Indic architectural sciences; the perfect and integral form of Indian architecture. It presupposes (implies the presence of ) of a circle and results from it. Hence, Vastupurushmandala is a square
In Brahmanas it is said the round earth was once mobile & floating, until the cardinal points fixed themselves, which fixed the earth. In this fixed position it is known as chaturbhristi (RV. C. 58.3). These four points are where heaven & earth seem to meet, where sun rises &sets
In indic symbolism, the fixed earth is drawn as 4 cornered, each side ruled by regents of that direction. The earth which supports our movement & weight is round; however when in touch with the Cosmos & its laws, it becomes fixed & 4-fold. Prithvi mandala is thus a square mandala
