Public schools don't adequately teach our children.
Here are 10 skills you need to teach your kids immediately (because public school won't):
1. How to start a business
Teach your kids how to think entrepreneurially - how to see opportunities to make money, how to chase them, and how to go from idea to execution.
Encourage them to learn by doing by trying their hand at this themselves.
2. How to make a budget
The average American is $90,460 in debt.
Our bad cultural financial practices are partly to blame - but most people also don't know how to manage money.
Teach your kids early. Give them an allowance to manage. Let them budget dinner. Play budget games.
3. How to build a portfolio
Portfolios are one of the best ways to land opportunities and build a network.
A portfolio comes in many forms:
-blog
-podcast
-videos
-Twitter
The goal is to show the world what you're capable of. Encourage your kids to build one.
4. How to win a negotiation
Life is full of negotiations.
Teach your kids how to navigate disagreements, find win-win situations, and advocate for what they want.
Their negotiation skills will have a huge impact on their long-term life outcomes.
5. How to manage a project
Seeing a project through from idea to completion is an important skill.
Teach your kids the basics of project management - creating to-do lists? GANTT charts? - and let them try their hand at it.
6. How to become a subject matter expert
If you read three books on a topic, you know more about that topic than 99% of the population.
Encourage your kids to pick a topic they're curious about (like dolphins or sports cars), research it, and share what they've learned.
7. How to build a network
A strong network is one of the best kinds of leverage.
Encourage your kids to meet people who
-share their interests
-are subject experts in their field
-can teach them interesting things
Teach them the art of conversation and the art of the followup.
8. How to sell yourself
Knowing how to pitch your skills, capabilities, and qualifications for a job or an opportunity makes a huge difference in your long-term trajectory.
Everything is sales. Teach your kids how to sell their value well.
9. How to find and seize opportunities
The world is full of opportunity, but it goes to those who know how to use it.
Teach your kids how to spot an opportunity ("my neighbors travel often and need a dog walker") and how to take action on it ("I can build a dog walking empire")
10. How to fail forward
So many kids grow up scared of the punishment (real or perceived) that comes with failure.
But really, failure is one of life's greatest teachers.
Teach your kids how to embrace the lessons failure can teach them.
10 life lessons to teach your kids, the tl;dr:
1. Business (how to start one)
2. Budgeting
3. Portfolio building
4. Negotiation (how to win!)
5. Project management
6. Becoming a subject matter expert
7. Networking
8. Sales
9. Finding and seizing opportunities
10. Failing forward
