1. Zahid Hamidi says political leaders should not go on vacations overseas when the country is hit by massive floods.
"Going abroad is not the best decision when the people who elect them are facing hardship," the DPM says.
2. Zahid adds that political representatives must be prepared to be around during these critical times.
Earlier, Terengganu MB Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar apologised for leaving the state when it was hit with severe flooding.
3. Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Committee chairperson cites a finding by DOSM, revealing that the country had incurred a loss of around RM6.1 billion due to floods in 2021.
He adds, this figure does not include other large expenditures to help manage floods.
4. Zahid has also called on all state governments to step up their flood preparedness plans.
He says this should include taking preventive measures to ensure that environmental damages do not worsen existing conditions.
5. "Forest clearings without caring for the preservation of the environment must be stopped," he says.
"Maintaining good drainage systems should be a habit and not be given priority only when there are floods."
