Growing up we were broke
But this year in particular we were struggling pretty hard
My mom passed away 5 years prior and my dad was trying to figure out life
As the days approached for Christmas he sat me down

He let me know that we didn’t have a lot of money
He told me that I wouldn’t be getting anything on my list this year
I was disappointed, but looking back I am grateful

Now that I am a father and husband
I understand how hard it is to balance finances and expectations
I have felt the pull of bills, birthdays, and holidays
But that Christmas I got a reminder that has been with me for decades

When I woke up that morning, there was one present under the tree
It was a necklace from a family friend who was a jeweler
A braided gold necklace with a little football charm on it
I never felt more grateful for a gift

To this day, I wear this necklace
It is a reminder of my dads devotion to my family and that moments matter
It also keeps me grounded in the reality of life’s ups and downs
