1. North Macedonia’s government has asked companies to excuse pregnant women and people aged over 60 from work, amid high levels of air pollution.
Emergency measures were imposed in the capital Skopje and 3 other cities, including limiting construction work to a six-hour period.
2. No sports events will be staged on any day with high air pollution levels, and other outdoor activities will be curtailed.
The government says it would reduce the use of its official vehicles by half.
3. The government also ordered the relevant ministries to provide shelter for homeless people and boost emergency services and home visits to people with chronic illnesses.
IQAir ranked Skopje as the third most polluted city in the world for Dec 24, after Bishkek and Lahore.
4. It says the levels of toxic PM10 and PM 2.5 particles in Skopje were 28 times higher than the WHO’s safety threshold.
Officials estimate over 3,000 people in North Macedonia die each year due to air pollution, which is mostly from the use of wood-burning stoves, among others.
