Yes!
We mark time using generations.
Mathathi—1757-1791 are said to have been introduced to boiling meat by the Maasai, then mixing the thathi/soup with herbal medicine. They were healthy AF!
Ndemi—1792-1826 are said to have come of age in a time of land scarcity.
[thread]
Ndemi started clearing higher primeval forests. Ndemi means those who cut. Or the defiant ones. (Hi Dr. Dre)
Before Mathathi, Agīkūyū are said to have roasted our meat.
The generations are commemorated for their impact and used to signify deep change in Gīkūyū culture.
Mathathi introduced us to traditional medicine in soup.
Gathubu ka mītī is still common among elders where I come from.
Their descendants in the next generation clearly needed the strength for their blade swinging.
Ndemi are considered the quintessential hard working Kikuyus who literally cleared the bushes and to expand the boundaries of Gikuyu land.
The practice of ‘kuuna ithaka’ persisted until the Europeans stopped it [or did they?]
A story goes that by the time of Ndemi’s initiation, land in the slopes of Nyandarua had been exhausted.
The results of the population boom (probably thanks to the good herbal soup) had to get fresh real estate.
Especially if they were to start their own families.
At the time, as is Gikuyu culture today, one had to seek the elders' deliberation and approval for actions of such deep consequence.
Ndemi did not wait for anyone's permission. Makīrema. Each sharpened their rūhiū and set their eyes on the promised land of Kiambu.
Their actions were frowned upon by their elders — birthing the defiance tag: Ndemi/Iremi.
Their defense was that the ruling generation was too slow in giving direction.
Our land issues might be endemic. 🥹😫
Mathathi came first, then Ndemi — chances are that there were multiple initiation/army regiment sets in between — communally grouped under the name of the older/dominant/reputable/ruling set.
Corrections, clarifications, suggestions, additions… all extremely welcome.

Check your ID, ask who you are named after. Ask why. Ask who your elders and people are named after. And why. Ask how. Ask when. Ask what happened.
Then share.
