Explaining math in a data science interview is a trap.
Do this instead. 🧵

There’s nothing more frustrating than failing interviews.
And one of the most common complaints is “insufficient knowledge in answering math questions.”
Well, I’m here to tell you that if you are explaining math in a data science interview...
... then you are falling for a massive trap.
Why?
Explaining math in an interview is:
1. Not productive.
2. Easy to mess up
3. Likely to be criticized
So what's the solution?
Use this 3-step framework for answering “math questions”:
Example: K-means algorithm
1. State why the math concept is important
Clustering with the K-means algorithm is important because it can help us identify similar patterns from groups in our data.
2. Refocus on the business
K-means can help the business identify similar customers based on their purchasing habits.
3. Show how you’ve used it.
I’ve used K-means to identify similar customers and also to show outliers that are totally unrelated to others but are unique and important to the business.
This helped me do XYZ.
This 3-step pattern can be used for ANY math, statistics, or data science concept in the interview.
It works by totally avoiding the “nuts and bolts” of the math.
Most importantly, it showcases YOU and your experience in using the tool to help the business.
If you’re reading this and you’d like help learning data science…
Or help in getting a 6-figure data science job…
… Then I’d love to help.
I’d like to share a free blueprint for getting a 6-figure data science job with you.
I put together a free 40-minute training…
And it outlines:
1. The 3 mistakes you’re currently making
I made them. They cost me 5 years.
And about 90% of data scientists suffer from at least one of them.
2. The 10 most important skills to include on your roadmap
These are tools, tactics, habits, and processes that moved the needle for me.
And I bet they will move the needle for you too.
