It is a commercial site yes, but it gives a nice rundown on the risks of lowering heating and ventilation to save on energy costs in modern plastic wrapped homes: mold. breeze-technologies.de
As a rule of thumb, if your house is well insulated you can safely assume you have less than optimal indoor air quality. Although not a counter-measure, a cheap hygrometer will at least tell you when your home is at increased risk of catching mold. Buy several.
Modern homes have several benefits but air quality isn't one of them. Old article but nothing has changed (at least not changed for better). theguardian.com
Traditional homes used materials that "breathed"(transporting humidity bot trapping it), they absorbed water when humid and released it when dry, no off-gassing: it might be cold but at least you didn't have to breath in mold and formaldehyde (gets worse the younger you are).
In homes as in architecture, everything is a compromise. Whatever you think of traditional building materials, at least you can turn the electricity off completely if you can't afford the bill and your house won't poison your air or start rotting in exchange.
