Part A - Quotes
"It would be an injustice if Cristiano Ronaldo retired without winning an international trophy. Such a general, such a leader."
β€” Sep Blatter, ex- FIFA President (Oct, 2015)
β€œPortugal failed in 2004, but I am sure they can win in France in 2016. They are a strong unit. Cristiano has been stand out for Madrid. They will get to the final and win.”
β€” Michael Platini, ex-UEFA administrator (Jan, 2016)
Part 2 - Context surrounding the tournament
Clearly we are able to deduce that both Blatter and Platini had a desire to see Cristiano Ronaldo win the tournament. Before the stay of Euro 2016, the tournament was inexplicably increased to 24 teams to allow for outsiders (such as Portugal to win)
β€œWe have seen extremely competitive groups with several teams fighting for qualification, a high quality of football played and great enthusiasm in several nations who have never or rarely qualified for a major tournament.
β€” Michel Platini, ex-UEFA administrator (Sep, 2015)
Such an increase to the tournament did not occur before Ronaldo played for Portugal. Therefore it is likely that was done to increase the potential of Portugal winning.
In 2016, both Platini and Blatter were arrested due to corruption charges and replaced within FIFA and UEFA respectively. Just months after Portugal became European Champions. They were banned for 6 years from holding postions in football.
We therefore must consider that corruption during the tournament was possible with both men clearly favouring Portugal as a successful team prior to the start or Euro 2016.
Both Platini and Blatter knew how a Ronaldo success would help bring the world spotlight on both organisations and increase PR opportunities as well as financial opportunities in the future.
Thanks for reading. Like and retweet.
