"FOOTBALL IS A GAME OF 2x1" - Ayrton Sargusingh
---
Small thread (1/15) about creating and dealing with 2x1 situations
Thread has an educational purpose.
Due to the position of our two players, we can create a 2x1 situation in two ways
.
1. Horizontally
It is often below the pressing line, when we need to beat/pass one player who is pressing us. The most common situation is two CB's against opp's striker in build up. But you can create this situation also in other zones.
2. Vertically.
The player with the ball has the option to pass forward behind the opponent.
As you can see, we can create a numerical advantage only because of our player positions.
Other way is to do rotation. From verticall to horizontal to verticall to horizontal...
It's easier to create a numerical advantage on the wings. We often create because of opponent's defensive compact 3x2 situation.
"Take this 2x1 scenario. It's still a 2x1"...two times!
Quotes from @TPiMBW book (highly recommended!)
In the center of the pitch - where there is not much space - we are not always able to create a 2x1 situation.
But it may occur more frequently while you switch point of attack.
How to deal with 2x1? First of all...if you have a space - dribble! the best way is to dribble in opponent direction. The most common mistake is to pass...to early. You create for your teammate 1x1 (which is not a problem when you have good dribbles of course)
But even if you have good dribblers...you can create them more space. Dribble to the pressure and pass at the last possible moment. Look how opponent is moving because of the ball at the video - similar situation, different behaviours - different consequences.
In a 2x1 situation... look at your opponent first! He will tell you what to do.
Although 2x1 situations occur quite often, it lasts a short while. The life of this situation is very very short. If you create it and don't use it, you will not only lose your numerical advantage, but you will start to be outnumbered (the opponent react!)
The opponent on defense also often makes 2x1 situations in his favor. After all, that's what good defense is all about. Surround the ball area with more players and don't let the opponent to progress.
Summary:
When I first read that football is a 2x1 game, I didn't understand what the author of this thesis meant. Now I understand it more. Everything in football has its moment and place. It is important to be able to create these concepts and use them at the right time.
Try to analyze this action. How many 2x1 do you see?
