Kitab Sulaym, the classical Shia text that provides an alternative history of Islam, portrays Abu Bakr in a light that is not as unfavorable as most Shias would assume.
For example, Abu Bakr is in tears after the alleged attack. He also orders that Ali should be set free
1/5
after he was taken captive.
The second report includes both Abu Bakr and Omar being overwhelmed by the guilt and seeking Fatima's forgiveness. She refuses to forgive them.
It is unfortunate that those Shias that attempt to portray Abu Bakr in a negative light avoid mentioning
such details in their films and plays.
In other words, the most negative classical portrayal of Abu Bakr isn't damaging enough for these folks.
There is so much to say about Kitab Sulaym and it shouldn't be taken seriously, especially in its modern form.
What we do know from classical texts is not in line with the manuscripts that are relied on in modern prints.
This is evident to whoever studies the Abdulrazzaq and the Hammaad bin Eisa routes.
Don't let me get started on how Abdulrazzaq never narrated this nonsense.
Currently, Muhammad Baqir al-Zinjani al-Khu'ini's edition is the relied-upon edition, which is seriously lacking since it fails at what it is supposed to set out to do:
To provide the reader with the book of Sulaym as written by Sulaym.
tl;dr
Shias make use of clearly unreliable reports to attack Abu Bakr and Omar, but then realize that the unreliable reports include favorable things so they withhold those parts.
May Allah be pleased with them both.
