4 Skills To Teach Your Children & Strengthen Your Family For Generations:
1. Recognize Advertising
Data collection had made advertising unbelievably effective.
It's a rare skill to recognize you're getting sold something when it's exactly what you want.
Young demographics are coveted by advertisers.
Your kids should know how the game is played.
In my family, we play the "Ad Game" when watching TV together.
The winner is the 1st person to:
• Say "ad!" when one appears, &
• Correctly identify what the ad is selling.
It's fun, keeps us from zoning out, & trains us to quickly identify the mechanics of advertising.
2. Go Directly To The Source
The internet makes it easy to find what you want.
It also creates a habit of relying on 3rd parties for everything.
For children, this creates a huge chasm between "production" & "consumption".
The hard stuff gets done elsewhere, out of sight.
In my family, we:
•Visit & buy food from farms
•Tour historic sites (esp. boyhood homes of US Presidents)
•Stop at HQs of big companies (usually just the lobby)
All reveal the source & "realness" that's normally hidden by systems of convenience.
Production > Consumption
It’s an easy framework that pays off big. If your child:
•Has a sports hero? → Find out their daily training regimen
•Has a history project on the Monroe Doctrine? → Read a copy of the actual document online
•Says they want to be a dentist? → Find one to shadow for a day
3. How To Rest
Part of studying why families succeed is studying reasons they fail.
One is a complete famine of rest. Not just sleep (although that's big).
I mean a rest from the constant burden of having to "make it happen."
Habitual rest & fun together builds family unity.
In our family, we set aside 1 day a week to rest from self-gain.
Not easy for us adults, proud of our work ethic.
But with a family, you realize work is not the only thing we're here for.
On Sundays, my kids know "we don't work, we rest & we play because God loves us."
4. Independent Work
It's rare to find someone working on just one thing, let alone what they're interested in.
The ability to work totally alone, without distraction, on work that's interesting is a valuable skill.
Especially in the world today's young people are inheriting.
In my family, we encourage independent projects:
•Staple blank paper into books kids write their own stories
•Have kids prep & present (stand on chair at dinner) a 2 min talk on topic of their choice
•Choose 1 notable person to study for 3 months (travel helps if possible)
Yes: hobbies, playing sports, & side projects bring all kinds of financial upside.
But I concentrate on my family finding joy in daily life, which seems more & more to be a learned skill.
I want them to have interests, to be interested, & get all the rewards that come with it.
