1. The Ninoy Aquino International Airport resumed normal operations after a power outage disrupted its air traffic control and 361 flights on Jan 1.
Manila International Airport Authority says it was due to the unprecedented failure of both primary and secondary power supplies.
2. MIAA says the communication and radar equipment failure on Sunday forced hundreds of flights to be cancelled, delayed or diverted, affecting some 65,000 passengers.
Numerous other flights were forced to re-route to avoid Philippine airspace.
3. β€œIt will take around 72 hours or thereabout for the airlines to normalise their operations,” says the airport authority.
Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific are offering passengers due to fly on Sunday free rebooking or the option to convert tickets into vouchers.
4. Meanwhile, the Department of Transportation says the main cause of the power supply problem is still being determined.
Its Secretary Jaime Bautista says the outdated existing facility should be upgraded immediately and that a backup system is also needed.
5. β€œThis is [an] air traffic management system issue.
β€œIf you will compare us with Singapore, for one, there is a big difference, they are at least 10 years ahead of us,” Bautista says.
6. NAIA has previously been ranked among the world’s worst international gateways, with flight delays a regular occurrence.
It also has a history of upgrades being delayed or abandoned due to disputes between the airport and contractors.
