You're afraid to take the next step. The next big risk. Because it moves you outside the pale. Out there, you're left to fend for yourself. Resources scarce, or zero. You have to make it. And if you don't, in the long run, it will be game over. This end state is what you dread.
This ghastly image you freeze frame mentally, which freezes you in the moment. Disabling you to take the risk. Not all risks end up in lethality. Some do. One must discern. Whether something is truly do or die, and whether that moment is just and right now.
