1. Lawyers for Liberty has condemned MBPJ and the Selangor government for imposing a RM0.90 fee on migrants taking the PJ City Bus.
LFL director Zaid Malek says "The imposition of this fare is irrational and arbitrary. Hence, this act is tantamount to bigotry, plain and simple."
2. Zaid referred to a statement made by the Selangor MB's aide Jay Jay Denis to the Vibes, which assured that the RM0.90 fare is not for profit.
"However, this begs the question on why such discriminatory fare would need to be imposed in the first place on the poorest users."
3. He explains, migrant workers are essential to critical industries, and are integral to Malaysia's development.
Zaid says many of them take up jobs that Malaysians refuse to for lower pay and harsh conditions "to the point that they often fall victim to labour exploitation."
4. "The fare discrimination is emblematic of a larger problem of discrimination suffered by this vulnerable group at the hands of the authority. Xenophobia must not be a part of any government policy."
LFL calls for the discriminatory fare to be removed.
