There’s one skill that can make or break your future.
Master it and you can accomplish anything....
OR
Drown in distractions and get nowhere.
The skill?
Focus.
Here're 7 tips to make sure you'll crush it this year:
1. Intention
Research by Peter Gollwitzer has shown that setting a specific intention skyrockets chances of success.
❌ “Go to bed early”
✅ “Set a timer for 9pm and turn off all screens when it goes off to prepare for sleep.”
Your goal needs to be clear, to accomplish it.
2. Plan your day
Every Sunday write down all of your tasks for the week.
• Rank tasks based on priority
• Create batches of similar tasks (reading, writing, editing)
• Assign batches of 1-3 tasks to each day
Deciding what to do hurts your focus. Plan first, then execute.
3. Handle distractions
Everything that catches your attention is a threat to your focus.
• Put your phone in another room
• Tidy your desk(top)
• Turn off notifications
Make your environment less attractive than the task at hand and focus will be easy.
4. Have a reset ritual
Set a timer for 30min. and focus on ONE task.
When the timer goes off and you’re focused, keep going.
When you’re distracted, take a break.
Stretch, drink water and take some deep breaths.
Decide what to focus on next and repeat the process.
5. Listen to music
Music can block out noise and help you focus.
These work well for me:
• Synthwave
• Hans Zimmer
• Classical music
Listen to this only when you work and your brain will soon associate the soundtracks with focus.
6. Meditate
Doing nothing ironically helps you to get done more.
Meditation increases your concentration, trains you to resist distractions, and reduces anxiety.
Invest 10min. of time every morning to sit in silence and be rewarded with calm focus during the day.
7. Wind off
You can’t focus all day.
Aim for 2-4h each day and then allow your mind to relax.
Take a walk, read a book or watch Netflix if you like.
Go easy when you’re done so you can go hard again tomorrow.
