In November 2022, he broke two major records:
On 5 November, he became the youngest player ever to score 10 goals in the Bundesliga, aged 17 years and 350 days.
On 23 November, he became the youngest German debutant ever in the World Cup, aged 18 years and 3 days.
Magnificent.
Injury History:
Objectively, it's important to show his injury history, which can be found on TransferMarkt.
Yet, take into account that you can only know the true conditions of the player with actual checkings.
Possible reasons: young, too quick integration to pro, and so on.
Tactical Focus:
In the 2022/23 season, Dortmund plays with two main formations: 4-2-3-1 & 4-4-2.
In case it's 4-2-3-1, Moukoko is being used as an advanced forward and leads the press.
In case it's 4-4-2, he forms a second-striker role, just behind Modeste.
Let's talk on BVB.
Team style:
Naturally, Dortmund likes to play fast, direct football, preferably using combinations between players.
However, this Dortmund is quite a different version from what we've remembered. They're 6th, with 21 goals conceded, and are losing the ball a lot in build-ups.
Pressing:
Dortmund controls most areas of the pitch and runs at low-mid level teams with pace, athleticism, and intensity up-front.
With a PPDA of 11.5, BVB is second only to Bayern, who has a PPDA of 9.5, in terms of intensity.
In total, Dortmund has 142 high turnovers.
General Data:
Youssoufa Moukoko, compared to Bundesliga CFs in the 2022/23 season, with a minimum requirement of 460 minutes of play throughout the season.
Each stat will be explained with a context to the style of play, capacities, potential, and such.
Hope you like these.
#1: Physical Data
When judging a CF, many people are interested in the amount of pace the player can possess.
As an inexperienced and underdeveloped teenager, Moukoko's top speed this season (33 km/h) is lower than the league average, yet is sprinting more.
Potential to grow.
#2: 360-Awareness & Hold/Link-Up Play
In these pictures, there's something that I like about Moukoko and something that I less like about him.
Cons: by passing the ball back, he missed a creation of a clear goalscoring opportunity.
Pros: his location between the lines & entry.
At times, just as here, you can notice his threat, once he's given the freedom and space he wants, between the lines.
10 seconds after Schlotterbeck's great play infield, Moukoko was at the box with the ball to his feet.
The youngest goalscorer in the history of Der Klassiker.
#3: Creation
Compared to the rest of the league, Moukoko isn't really a high-volume creator, although, as mentioned in the previous tweets, this skillset is definitely a potential to enter into his profile.
As such, his tendency is to pass the ball backward rather than forward.
For Dortmund, Sรผle mainly plays as an inverted RB and is very important to Moukoko.
When he receives the ball on the right flank or dribbles inside, Moukoko appears in/around the right half-space (and zone 14) to receive the ball from him.
And, this combination works very well.
#4: Athletic Structure
At 179cm, 72kg, and 18 years of age, he may seem little and easy to tackle, but the truth is that he isn't.
In fact, one of the world's best CBs at making direct pressure, in my eyes, Dayot Upamecano, struggled against him a lot at the Der Klassiker game.
And, if you want, it can also be noticed in his beautiful goal against Bochum. See how he holds the defender off his back. That's a precious trait for a forward to have in his profile.
#5: Counterpressing
One of my favorite things about Moukoko, which I haven't expected at all, is his defensive work rate.
As the data shows, he's above the 80th percentile in terms of defensive duels made per 90, as well as in the winning rate % in them.
Strength & Maturity.
#6: Discipline
As mentioned in the previous tweet, Moukoko is mobile defensively, and now, I'll show you that he also shows a high level of discipline.
In fact, he makes 0.19 fouls on average per defensive duel, far below the league average, yet, is at the top of the quantity.
In the 2022/23 season, the match where he made the most defensive duels, and also won in all of them, was against Bayern, with 6/6 duels won.
When facing some of the league's most quality players, in terms of scanning, he managed to be on their blindside and to knock them off.
#7: Aerial Ability
Actually, he likes to have the ball to his feet.
This can be seen in being the least involved CF in the league in aerial duels, and even in the little amount of these, he's below the 10th percentile in winning.
Yet, it has nothing to do with his heading.
#8: Level Of Two-Footedness
In general, Moukoko feels the most comfortable with his left-foot, especially in ball-striking, so is better on the right rather than the left side.
Yet, he does show a decent level of right foot, capable of receiving passes and making short ones.
#9: On-The-Ball Capacities
So far, I've discussed many aspects of his play, before even getting into technique and goalscoring.
That, for itself, shows you how complete he is.
Flawless changes of direction, unpredictability, and superb close control, make him a great dribbler.
#10: Decision-Making
Continuing the previous tweet, the quite low percentile of dribbling success rate % is a result of his enthusiasm to have more.
Also, as shown in aspect #2, his vision of play isn't at the top level yet, hence he doesn't notice movement.
But, he's only 18.
#11: Comfortability In Tight Spaces
I've noticed that he feels comfortable when opponents circle him, and how well he can generate a shooting opportunity for himself, by drawing those opponents.
And, again, the Sรผle - Moukoko - Bellingham combination. So important for Dortmund.
#12: Ball-Striking Performances
For our dessert, the ball-striking of Moukoko.
The numbers speak for themselves, as he standouts in the number of goals, shot attempts, goal conversion, shots on target, and all of this when he's only at the 39th percentile of touches in the box.
--> He can score with the right foot in "tap-ins" situations, as well as scoring headers, but what makes him really special is his powerful left-foot, with his instep.
When he's given space, no matter where, he doesn't need more than 1 touch in order or deliver a powerful shot.
Mental Focus:
Let's look at the facts.
When he was 13, he played with the U17.
When he was 14, he played with the U19.
When he was 16, he played with the senior team.
As seen in aspects #5 and #6, he shows maturity with his off-the-ball aggressiveness, yet is disciplined.
In what roles/systems can he play?
1) Right Inside Forward:
Moving around the box and the half-space, looking to receive balls from the interiors/FBs, and to make combinations. His technical traits, such as "receive & go", will be beneficial there.
Suitable club: Liverpool.
2) Second-Striker:
I think this may become the optimal position for him.
While he can solve numerical issues around the final third with his on-the-ball capacities, he can also create, shoot from range, press, and make late entries into the box.
Suitable club: FC Bayern.
3) Advanced Forward:
At the moment, Moukoko's main role at Dortmund.
With killer instincts, well-timed runs, pace, hold-up play, link-up play, technique, pressing, ball-striking, and a lot more, as described in this thread. He's great there.
Suitable club: FC Barcelona.
