My 5 pillars for building a successful business:
1. Great products
2. Amazing customer service
3. Generous free offerings
4. Community engagement
5. Relationship building
Thoughts on each 👇
Great Products:
- Understand your audience so you can solve their problems better. Listen to feedback and ask questions
- Focus on fantastic design and UX (not just aesthetics)
- Extreme attention to detail
- Stellar onboarding, tutorials, and documentation
Amazing Customer Service
- Offer active support if possible
- Support's #1 priority should be empathy.
- After that: Quick response time, ability to anticipate the next question and get ahead of it, empowerment of customer
- Offer refunds:
Generous Free Offerings
- Give away stuff that's so good, others would charge for it
- Focus on solving problems 1st, funneling to your paid offerings 2nd (free stuff should always stand on its own)
- Give away content AND free tools
- Be classy, don't require email opt-in
Community Engagement
- Be where your community is. Twitter, Reddit, etc.
- Love your niche so much that you're excited to answer people's Twitter questions on Saturday morning
- 9/10 times, don't ask for anything. Build a rep as a happy, helpful presence
Relationship Building
- Aim to build friendships with the people in your niche
- Rising tide raises all ships. Collectively you should all grow your niche and bring in more customers
- Be willing to send a prospect to a competitor if you're not the right option
