I used to stress about everything a lot.
Then I adopted the “Last Time” principle:
Stress feels more acute when you don’t know when it’s going to end.
- ‘my startup isn’t working’
- ‘investors don’t believe in me’
- ‘my child is crying’
- ‘my parents are annoying’
But everything has a “Last Time”.
Your life is finite.
At some point, every event in your life will be the “last time” you experience it.
Think to yourself:
“How would I behave differently if this was the last time?”
Your child is crying again and you have to pick them up…
It’s exhausting, but what if this was the last time you picked up your child?
Would you savor this moment?
Your parents are getting older.
What if this was the last time you saw them?
Would you act kinder, be more patient, spend more time with them?
This applies to everything:
- your last ski trip
- your last disagreement with your partner
- even the last time you battle your toddler to potty train them
When your life feels stressful, remember:
There is a “Last Time” to everything.
We are finite.
Your struggles are finite.
Your happy moments are finite too.
