I'm currently doing my Medicine rotation, it is quite shocking the number of under 40 people that die from Heart problems
A lot of people don't really reckon with Heart Failure.
I made a list of what I noticed was killing young people's heart

HYPERTENSION
It's not a surprise that High blood pressure always find its way in every disease. From stroke, kidney disease, heart attack
Hypertension was the most common cause of Heart failure. sadly lot of young people were not aware of their blood pressure, till an emergency

ALCOHOL
An observation I also made was a lot of the young people were heavy drinkers. It was shocking to see that some people did not have high Blood pressures but had Heart changes that suggested Long history of Alcohol.
And Yes Chronic use of Alcohol, damages the Heart

SMOKING
It is no longer news that a lot of Young people smoke.
Go to every club, From Shisha, to Cannabis to Tobacco,
No one takes time to ask , as you are puffing all these, what organs are suffering.
I noticed a lot of young people with failing hearts had significant smokers

HEART VALVE PROBLEM
This was common amongst young people.
We always advocate People should take sore throat seriously and go to a hospital, Don't just lick tom tom
An organism that causes sore throat(STREP), if poorly treated can later in life destroy the heart (i'd explain)

KIDNEY DISEASE
Might be a shocker to find Kidney disease here. But there is a relationship between the Kidney and the Heart
There is an entity called CARDIO RENAL SYNDROME.
It explains how both Kidney and Heart disease affect each other
Couple of young people had this.

Sickle cell has an effect on a lot of organs, the Heart inclusive.
It is so sad we don't have enough Hematologists in Nigeria, I'm glad with what a lot of NGOs are doing

Diabetes has a direct relationship with being able to cause Heart attack and Heart problems
I noticed a lot of young people had never checked their blood sugar.
An emergency on the hospital bed was the first time and after tests were done to have a look at the Heart

BORN WITH HEART PROBLEMS
A couple of young people actually were born with some Heart defects and they never knew.
Their first call was when they got tired after exercising
Coming to the hospital, a silent heart problem had lingered & picked lately. we advocate for routine tests

There are subtle problems that suggest Heart failure, Don't wait
swollen legs or tummy
Getting tired easily
Having to use plenty pillows to sleep because of breathlessness
Eating little & getting filled
Have to catch your breath after little steps & many more

The Essence of this post is not to scare anyone.
It is just to raise awareness how heart failure is killing a lot of people
If we get more people to recognise these signs and present early, we can save lives
