1/ Rural Hindu society increasingly runs on the shoulders of overburdened women. Alcoholism among men and loan sharking are causing enormous suffering. Men feel trapped in these vices and all too often choose suicide in despair.
These problems have to be addressed holistically.
2/ As a first step, our media and elites should not promote a drinking culture.
I have emphasized to our employees that drinking may be their private choice but as a company we frown upon public displays. I frequently warn our people that public drunkenness will get them fired.
3/ We also must recognise the deep despair in rural areas arising from structural economic changes caused by agricultural hardship and the decline of rural craftsmen and artisans - weaving, pottery, vessels, local machinery, vehicles, all of those self employed have disappeared.
4/ The descendants of those self-employed artisans are now landless labour. Their only option is migration. Those who cannot migrate fall into despair.
Macro economists accept the decline of rural areas as a given, even welcome that as a sign of progress. Think different!
5/ With 1.4 billion people, with 60% in rural areas, I am not sure there is any way forward tor India that simply accepts rural decline.
Countries like Germany and Switzerland do have vibrant world-class industry in their rural areas so rural decline is not some natural law.
6/ Our village school has started a program to train youth in manufacturing skills and the associated technologies. That will grow over 2023.
In 2023, I also plan to start a small rural manufacturing unit and grow that based on experience.
Turn around has to start somewhere. 🙏
