Privacy – a key to contentment and happiness
Nothing is private anymore. People share too much without realizing the consequences of oversharing. Gaining a social media following has become more important to many than living their lives.
In pursuit of a following, many people submit to the desires of their followers. The followers begin to feel entitled to details about the private life of the individual and even infringed upon it.
Islam values privacy. For ourselves and for others. To mind our own business, but also to keep the details of our lives private. Oversharing can lead to evil eye, jealousy, wrong intentions, and ego boosts. All of these are sinful in Islam and must be avoided.
The secret to a happy life is to know the limits of what should and should not be shared in public.
Prophet Yaqub (AS) did not want his sons to enter a city from one entrance, to avoid jealousy. Today we plaster pictures of our families all over social media for the world to see
We complain about our spouses publicly, flash pictures of them for all to see, and boast about our vacations and luxury homes. All of this goes against the spiritual essence of Islam.
Take a step back and reevaluate your usage of social media.
Be intentional in your privacy. The less society knows about your private life, the happier your life will be. You will experience higher levels of contentment, inner peace and blessings
