When we beat Real Madrid 4-0 last year, we dominated possession 60% of the time. It’s not about keeping the ball, but winning it back once we lose it. This is why I want us to lineup like this ->
On paper, this is how it looks. We have used this system in the past, and I think it’s the right one against Real Madrid.
With the ball we play with a back three. Balde pushes forward and becomes an extra midfielder/winger. Busquets & Frenkie in a double pivot (which gives Frenkie more freedom to be creative as Busquets covers for him). Pedri & Gavi in the space between their midfield and defense.
Once we lose the ball, we are able to press high with numbers. There is always the risk that Real Madrid play through the pressure. However, as we defend man vs man, the idea is that Christensen, Kounde & AraĂşjo win their battles.
Araújo as a right back? He won’t necessarily be a right back. He will play on the right side to handle Vinicius. Yes, Kounde can also do so, but Araújo is faster & stronger. In the past, he has used his physicality to beat Vinicius 1v1. It’s proven.
As Araújo stays back, Dembele is isolated out wide. He is our best dribbler, and he can take on Real Madrid’s left side - a place they have struggled. Gavi should make runs from the deep between Madrid’s left centre back and left back to cause confusion.
Pedri has been the one dictating our games this season. I want him to have a lot of freedom. He should be allowed to drop deep, and could occasionally switch position with Frenkie. Once Pedri is in a deeper position, Balde should make a run in behind Real Madrid’s defense.
A 3-2-2-3 gives us more control in midfield, both defensively & offensively. Midfielders will have to attack the box alongside Lewandowski. We saw a perfect example with Pedri scoring against Real Betis, but unfortunately Raphinha’s toe was in an offside position.
