ALEJANDRO GARNACHO ~ ANALYSIS of his profile~ MEGA Thread 🧵🇦🇷
This thread will analyse the profile of Alejandro Garnacho, his strengths and where he could improve. I have rewatched every single minute that he has played for United this season. I will cover:
- Receiving Ball
- With Ball
- Movement off Ball
- Defensive Work
- Improvements
Receiving Ball
Garnacho is comfortable receiving the ball both on the touchline and in the half-spaces. This is a massive advantage for us, because it gives us more flexibility in terms of using our fullbacks in different ways.
If Garnacho receives the ball on the touchline…
… Shaw or Malacia can operate in more inverted areas. Whereas if he comes to receive in the half spaces, Shaw or Malacia can go on the overlap. These facets can be adjusted depending on the opponent or the demands of that particular game, which is a big advantage for us.

With Ball
Garnacho is a very tricky customer for opposition defenders. His pace, directness and quick feet are all massive assets he can use to beat defenders 1 on 1.
Garnacho beats his marker with his quick feet.

Clip 4
Against Villa
Garnacho uses his speed to fly past Douglas Luiz and manages to make space for a shot, which is blocked by the Villa defender.
Clip 5
Against Wolves
Garnacho receives the ball from Malacia and is so direct when running with the ball, very often keeping the ball very close to his feet, wins a free kick from Semedo here.
Clip 6- The one two
Garnacho is explosive and so difficult to stop when he lays the ball off to a teammate and then looks for the return for a one two. Incredibly hard to stop.
Against Sheriff
What about his end product?
Clip 7- Goal against Sociedad
Firstly, the run in behind is really nice, as well as the weight of pass from Ronaldo, it can be hard to control yourself when running at speed but Garnacho stays in control and finishes exquisitely.
Clip 8- Goal against Fulham
The one two and the desire he shows here to get into the box is exquisite from Garnacho, a lovely finish as well.
Clip 9- Assist against Villa
A world class cross into Mctominay’s path here, wonderful assist. One of the best you’ll see this season. Being able to produce this at the age of 18 is so promising.
Clip 10- Assist against City
Gets slightly fortunate with the deflection back into his feet, but the cut back for Rashford’s goal is really clever, into a really dangerous area for Rashford to attack.
Movement off ball
The Argentinian is also equally as comfortable when coming short to receive passes as he is making runs beyond the opposition back line. He can be very effective, both against teams who sit deeper in a low-block and those with a high line.
Coming Short
Clip 11
He often comes short to exchange a few passes with team mates, it is important to do this at times just to get involved in the game and make sure you are not going without touching the ball for long spells of game.

Going in Behind
Garnacho’s intelligence, pace, directness also makes him a huge threat in behind opposition defences. It’s good to have this, as Martial, Sancho and Antony mostly come to feet- gives us a nice balance.

Clip 13
Shaw with an exquisite pass from LCB, really nice spot from him and the run from Alejandro in behind is excellent.

Work Off Ball
Garnacho’s excellent work rate off the ball is something I have noticed from the games he’s played this season. Both his aggression and determination to win the ball back (counter pressing) and the awareness to get back into shape and protect our left back.
Press/Reaction to losing ball
We know that counter-pressing is an important facet of Ten Hag’s ideology and Garnacho is someone who works tirelessly after losing possession of the ball.

Getting back into Shape
Equally so, we’ve seen United operate in a mid block for much of the season and in this shape it’s important that our wide players get back to support our full backs.

Where to Improve
Naturally at the age of 18, Garnacho is far from the finished product, I think he could improve in these 3 areas in particular:
- Consistency of final pass
- Decision making in final 3rd
- Balance when running with the ball (often slips)
Garnacho reminds me very much of an “old fashioned” winger, the best way to describe his profile in my opinion. Thank you for reading this thread, I hope you enjoyed it. Please do FOLLOW @ThreadmanChaza for more threads like these, see a collection of my other pieces below ⬇️
I appreciate all the support, if you would like to donate a small amount it would mean a lot to me. This piece took a huge amount of time to prepare and write. Thanks to everyone 🙏.
