Interesting article on the Basque people published in 1937
"Stubbornly they have resisted
not only conquest, but also
amalgamation in the flux of
shifting, prowling, predatory
peoples, up from the Tigris and
Euphrates, around the
Mediterranean since the dawn of
time."
*Washington (DC) Times. June 29, 1937
The Basque descended from Ancient Sumerians?
"It is assumed, too, that
Basques themselves stem from
the racial tree, back far beyond
the beginning of Aryan migration and conquest.
The most authoritative opinion seems to
be that the line of descent was
through the Sumerians."
Another article on Basque origins, 1909
"The race is a Catholic one and
their devotion to the Faith is
so firm that it is commonly said the
devil gave them up as a hopeless object
of his sinister attentions simply
because he could never understand or
master their language."
Further note that, besides their mysterious origins and unique language, the Basque people possess the highest amount of type O blood per capita (close to 50%) as well as the rarer RH- blood type (at around 30% of their population).

For those still interested in the Basque people and their land, here's a link to a film about them with Orson Wells as narrator (subtitled in Basque).
