Fear and COVID19
๐Ÿงต๐Ÿฆ
Essentially for me there are two kinds of fear in this pandemic:
Fear of the unknown and fear how people around me treat the risk. In the course of the pandemic, it gradually shifted towards fear of erratic behavior and false narratives in (anti-) scientific communcation. 1/x
In the first couple of weeks of the first lockdown I mainly feared the unknown virus. We all saw the stockpiled bodies in N Italy. At first, the protective effect of masks has been underestimated. I tried to avoid people in general, with few exceptions (best friends). 2/x
In the first 3-4 weeks I've been in "panic mode" but adapted to the new situation with help of my personal blog. Then I quickly got used to the "new normal" thanks to twitter and collecting scientific information. It calmed me down (and still does). 3/x
After mandatory masks were introduced, I changed to ffp2 masks later the year, I felt more protected. Main risk was the open-plan office where I didn't know the infection risk of my colleagues. In January 2021 I measured CO2 values but the device was shit and ppm too high. 4/x
I learned about the first longcovid reports in May 2020 and already enough information before the second wave in autumn to fear longcovid more than hospitalisation as an immunocompetent person. 5/x
While the first lockdown has been a shock, the second lockdown came as a relief. Public transport has been sparsely occupied again and in addition to mandatory masks, activities were quite safe then. 6/x
As soon as I learned the exchange rate of air in the office was 4x/hr, I was even more relieved.
Thanks to vaccination in spring/ autumn 2021, I felt protected against severe acute disease but new reports about longcovid after breakthrough infection still advised caution. 7/x
To sum up fear of infection... After a short time of shock where I was caught unprepared, I quickly managed to deal with the pandemic quite well in retrospective. Knowledge is power. Scientific knowledge got me to feel safer if I act appropiately. 8/x
The second part of fear has been more concerning until now. Journalists never asked the crucial questions - I went into detail here: 9/x
Politicians all shifted the goalposts from NoCovid to MaxCovid within a year - between January 2021 and January 2022 and concealing the criminal act of letting this virus rip through the population with open schools and protective measures become lesser there. 10/x
I noticed the growing gap between real development of the pandemic (variants, more immune escape, reinfections, breakthrough infection, longcovid despite vaccination, excess mortality rising) and the political narrative alias major consensus narrative. 11/x
The fear has reached it maximum now because the GBD ideology has won. This Australian newspaper report perfectily sums up the deep shit we are all into now. 12/x

And although I don't sympathisize with the ideologic fundament of this website, the motives of the pandemic strategy are well explained here - to let the virus rip through and protect the economy "no matter the cost". 13/x

If this is the future, my fear is how the majority of people behaves now, reckless and unconcerned that not only vulnerable people are still at risk but also healthy people may develop longcovid, and covid survivors will add to the "new" vulnerable group. 14/x
They don't even notice their behavior and thinking about the outcome of the pandemic (which is still going on imho) equals health supremacism, which is in fact a fascist ideology devalueing weaker people and favoring stronger people. That's where my fear comes from now. 15/15
