Chelsea soon after signing Mudryk signed another exciting young winger Noni Madueke from PSV.
We will be assessing the player, what kind of winger is he? strengths and weaknesses and what can he bring to Chelsea?
Let's get straight into it
Style of play
Noni primarily plays as a Right winger/forward in a 433, under Roger Schmidt and Ruud Vanisterooy, He is generally a ball-to-feet player, and he is very comfortable playing in the half spaces and being an outlet out wide
Noni in the half-space knows how to find space and position himself in between the lines to receive the ball and has good ball retention, strength(stronger than he looks), and hold-up play to withstand challenges or turn and drive with the ball and look for dangerous passes
he won't be easily bullied in the EPL, and this gives space for his RB to go forward, he's comfortable receiving the ball as he has good awareness and can manoeuvre his way past players, having started playing football as a CM, it's easy to see with the way links up with his team
He also has a very good sense of timing on when to release his overlapping Right back. That will mesh with Reece very nicely as he likes to cut in to engage the opposition fullback in a 1v1 and with a good sense of timing release the ball for them to bomb forward
and put in crosses and cutbacks and also link up with them with 1-2s and also play inside so the RB can give width. Mwene, Teze and Mauri Junior(All right backs that have played with him) particularly enjoyed that with him.
As an outlet, Noni is very good at creating separation between himself and the defender so they are on the back foot instantly when he gets the ball, so he stays wide right a lot when his team has the ball so his team has him as an outlet to go at defenders and cause problems,
He also in that vein of being an outlet, can make runs in behind opposition lines wide on the right, to get onto balls in the channels and look to isolate his man and beat them and make a shot-creating action.
He also likes to make inside runs in front of his full-backs, although it's not so common, He is not particularly a player that makes runs all the time but he can and does, he also understands the timing of making 3rd man runs in passing combinations
He is also a goal threat, his most consistent form of goal threat is, his ability to cut in with his dribbling ability and ball striking to shoot from medium to long distance(we will talk in more detail about his strengths), another way he is a goal threat is,
he likes to get into the box to get on the end of crosses, he loves to link up with his teammates with 1-2s and be involved in combination plays, and he makes runs into the box for crosses by being on the receiving end of 1-2 (give and goes) and be a threat in the box,
when he's involved in 1-2s, and passing combinations he makes runs into the box, he could just cut in and lay the ball off to his teammates and still makes the run, when he plays those passes,
he never stays still, and makes late runs to the box to get on the end of crosses and be a threat, he is decent in the air after all although he needs to work on his first-time finishes
what are his strengths?
Dribbling
Noni is a direct winger who loves to square up and take on players, he is a good outlet out wide and knows how to give separation (like we mentioned earlier). he is very direct, positive on 1st touch, and tries to get past players most time
his particular goto dribble technique is the FEINT, a technique I associate with top players as it gives a sense of pausa(changes the situation around you), sits defenders down, and gives you more time and space to pick passes and shoot when done effectively.
It's a skill Ousmane Dembele loves to use. Noni loves to use feints and when he lays off the ball to his teammates, makes him a very good 1v1 dribbler, like feints he also uses drops of the shoulders to beat his man, when he squares up his man, with his particular quick feet,
he can also manipulate the ball well in tight spaces in the box to give himself space and time to shoot and give cutbacks and crosses. He is very capable of going both insides (cut in) and outside(byline) with his right foot against defenders, with his feints,
his feints, make him a dangerous 1v1 player cause you cant easily block one side, he is quite ambipedal but not entirely, like a 7/10 because he usually controls the ball on his right foot before using his left to square up defenders 1v1 and uses his right foot to cross
He as a result wins many fouls for his team as many dribblers do cause he can protect the ball well.
Cutting in to shoot/good ball striking
Noni is direct and as I described earlier loves to cut inside onto his left foot to dribble past players and in this context likes to regularly take shots on goal. This season in the Eredivisie he takes 3.4 shots per game(5 games though),
but it has been a steady rise from his first senior season where he attempted 0.3 shots per game, and the last 2 seasons where he attempted 1.3, and 1.9 shots per game respectively,
he has the strength, technical ability, and speed to protect the ball to do that and try to get shots on goal with his good ball striking. Strength to cut in is an important cause, Chelsea has not had that for years after Hazard on the wings,
Pulisic never really cut in to score his goals, and Ziyech doesn't have the strength and dynamism to do it more than a handful of times. Now Chelsea has 2 wingers in Mudryk and Madueke who can do that and shoot on both wings which frankly we haven't had in recent history
Ball retention- He is very adept at holding up the ball and has decent press resistance to hold off challenges with strength and his quick feet, or in passing combinations, generally, he is direct but more measured than Mudryk who takes more risks,
he loses the ball 11.2 times per game in the Eredivisie this season, for context Mudryk lost the ball 16.2 times per game in the UCL. It doesn't mean Madueke isn't direct, he is just good at protecting the ball. He could at times look clumsy on the ball
but he is still raw(20 years) and hasn't played loads of games, he will grow to look more comfortable in his frame, but he has very good ball control. his bad touches are 2.2 per game in the Eredivisie, and Mudryk had 2.7 bad touches per game in the UCL
Madueke also in circumstances dissimilar to Mudryk has been playing in a possession-based system that tries to build up from the back under Schmidt and Van nister rooy than the counter-attacking style Shakhtar used in the champions league this season.
Chance creation-
Noni's ability to pass in the final third and carry the ball into dangerous areas into the box and look for cutbacks makes him a good chance creator, players like him dont need to be the eye of the needle passers,
because their dribbling does all the hard part for them and just puts them in a place to make more or less simple smart passes and crosses, although his crossing needs work on accuracy, getting into the right areas consistently makes him dangerous and when he improves that,
it will be more to his Arsenal, he usually gets chances from layoffs to teammates, cutbacks(high method of chance), crosses(still needs work), cut-in crosses, or link-up play with his teammates, he particularly this season improved the accuracy of his cutbacks,
he creates 2.6 chances in the Erevisidie for his team, in his last game for PSV against Fortuna Sittard, he created a whooping 7 chances and 2 big chances, so he can bring a more dynamic method of chance creation on Chelsea's right-hand side
Ball carrying-
Noni is a very good carrier of the ball, his dribbling ability, speed, and ball retention capabilities help him in that regard, he can carry the ball long distances, especially on counter-attacks,
either lays it into his teammates or tries to get shots, other times he could also lose it, but mostly he moves the ball up the pitch successfully,
Not high on the list but
Passing- Noni is a very good passer of the ball, it is a strength but it is much lower in the ranking of strengths than the rest, and it is something he can be more expansive with.
he is generally positive when he receives the ball and tries to give one-touch passes if he has teammates close to combining with him, he has switches of play in his locker, inside crosses, and cutbacks( improved) he also likes to make sharp passes to his teammates inside the box
when pinning defenders 1v1 similar to CHO that's his more common form of passes, he's not the most creative passer, but a sharp one, in combinations and neat link-ups, 1-2s with his teammates and that's the next step for him there to be riskier on it
Counter threat- The ball carrying makes him an immense threat on the counter as slaloming past players can easily be a cheat code on counters, his speed and ability to sense space also help him be an outlet on counterattacks, and be a threat in the box,
his ball striking his medium- to long-distance shooting makes him a danger in finishing counterattacking moves. Though he could very much do with learning when to release the ball better times
Work rate- This includes, pressing intensity and Tracking back to aid his fullback, he is very useful to his team in that aspect, he is fond of intercepting the opposition's loose passes and springing counters very similar to Eden in that respect. he makes 1.91 tackles per 90 too
Weaknesses
Injury issues- It is well documented that Noni sufferers from lots of muscle injuries, the fact they are muscle, makes it easier for reoccurrence, particularly in a team that has players getting injured every match day,
it is worrying, the hope is that as he grows more and more into his body and older it reduces
Crosses-
Noni usually gets himself in very good positions to cross in with his unpredictable nature in a 1v1, and despite being very comfortable with his right foot(used it to score against Ajax), he seems to not get the weight of his crosses on that foot particularly.
His cutbacks have improved this season though as shown by the graphic, he can very much improve on that since he will use his right foot to cross a lot, he's only completed a few 90 mins in his time at PSV
Finishing -
It is a weakness but he can also improve his finishing, he can get into decent positions for shots but at times, the finish lacks, he could do with more calmness in front of the goal. He is underperforming his xG but not by a huge mile
He's young and raw,
Noni like Mudryk also hasn't played so many minutes in his career, partly cause of injuries so he could make some ball control errors, and loose touches it looks like he doesn't have technical ability but it is a refining period for him,
.things like controlling his pace to make defenders slow down can also be better and taught.
How can Potter use Noni ?
Noni can be used as a right winger in the 433/4231 formation he seems to be building. Just because of the way both Mudryk and Noni like to come inside the half spaces to play as well as being outlets,
a 433 formation will be much more preferable so a 10 wouldn't clog the central spaces.
Noni can play as a roaming forward in as a CF, False 9, drifting into the half-space and knitting play together, there is a reason why Vivell wanted him to replace Nkunku as well,
knows how to find space between the lines and link up with his teammates and get into the box to get to the end of something
he's good on the half turn, can hold off opponents and swivel, and use his quick feet as well
and granted his movement in the box, he will suit Nkunku to a tee, as if Nkunku plays as the False 9 and drops to link up, He will have players like Noni that can both be outlets and threats in the box and can link up with them
and he's very tricky in the box with his technical ability and fast feet to keep the ball in tight spaces, but he's best on the right, one of his best games was against Ajax, where he had 6 dribble attempts, 4 successful, 4 shots, and scored 2 goals,
Chelsea has another winger that can be nurtured into a very useful threat on our side.
