Sadness like any other emotion, is temporary. And is a response to emotional stress.
Depression is always there. Emotional stress and hurt don't trigger it. It's like a dark shadow over you.
- Sadness is short-term
- Depression is long-term
Sadness fades on its own. But depression is persistent. Depressive episodes can last from months to even years.
- Sadness has a reason
- Depression is vague
You can easily share what's making you sad. For example, the loss of a loved one. Loss of property, etc.
Studies show that people struggling with depression don't understand why they're depressed.
- Sadness is subjective
- Depression is objective
The severity of sadness depends on the person affected. This is why it's easier to get out of sadness.
But depression requires a professional diagnosis. They need to see the symptoms before they can say you're depressed.
- Sadness affects just your mood
- Depression affects your whole life
You can alter your sadness by calling friends, trying new food, or lifting weights.
But research show that depression makes it hard to find enjoyment in anything. It affects your eating and sleeping patterns
All of these make it easy to stay in bed a day, feeling empty and like a shadow of yourself.
...or know someone experiencing longterm depressive behaviors.
