No More Baby Face!
A Biohacker’s Guide to Filling in a Patchy Beard
THREAD
If you suffer from a patchy beard or no beard, this thread is for you
You’ve probably Googled “how to fill in my beard” and either:
Got sold beard oils & vitamins that didn’t work
Or you were told it’s not possible because you don’t have the “genetics”
Both are wrong
Today we’re going to talk about how to grow NEW facial hair and fill in all the patchy spots.
But before we do 👇

Back to the thread!
The following compounds are proven to work:
-Minoxidil
-Tretinoin with Minoxidil
-Microneedling
-Oral castor oil
-Bimatoprost
-Cetirizine
-Testosterone
Minoxidil, also known as Rogaine, is a hair growth agent primarily used as a treatment for male pattern baldness but is evidenced for stimulating beard growth as well.
While the exact mechanisms of Minoxidil aren’t fully understood, we know:
1) Minoxidil is converted to minoxidil sulfate by an enzyme called sulfotransferase
2) Minoxidil increases bloodflow to the applied area
3) Minoxidil shortens the telogen phase (resting) and induces the anogen phase (growth)
4) Minoxidil converts velus hairs to terminal hairs
#4 is the most important
Why?
If you look closely, you have tiny, almost invisible hairs in the patchy areas of your beard
These are velus hairs
Also known as “peach fuzz”
Minoxidi converts velus hairs to terminal hairs (thick & dark)
Check out these INSANE results from a minoxidil-only protocol on the subreddit r/minoxbeards
Warning: minoxidil can cause serious side effects such as heart palpitations, dizziness, chest pain, hypotension, etc.
If this happens to you, you can try putting a lower amount or a lower strength on your face, or wait for your tolerance to build up
However, the safest option is to simply discontinue use
Minoxidil is NOT needed to grow a sick beard
Tretinoin
Tretinoin on it’s own may stimulate some mild hair growth, but combined with minoxidil it provides a synergistic effect
Think 1+1=3
This is because it increases the sulfotransferase enzyme we talked about earlier
Minoxidil non-responders typically have great results when adding in tretinoin
Microneedling
The concept of microneedling is simple
Poke 1000s of tiny holes into your face to produce an inflammatory response, thus increasing bloodflow and growth factors to the hair follicles
If microneedling WITH minoxidil, it is advised to only do it once a week and skip minoxidil and tretinoin on the day you microneedle
This is because microneedling will allow a significantly higher amount of minoxidil to absorb into your bloodstream, potentially causing the nasty side effects we discussed earlier
Oral Castor Oil
Castor oil contains a PEG2 agonist, ricinoleic acid, which is a PEG2 agonist
Castor oil makes scalp and beard hair grow faster, but is anecdotally reported to convert those velus hairs to terminal hairs
I have personally experienced this
The ideal protocol would look like
Week 1 0.5mL
Week 2 1mL
Week 3 & 4 1.5mL
Week 5+ 2mL
Since castor oil can act as a laxative, it’s important to titrate slowly
Typically this effect is prominent at 5mL+, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution
Note: It’s important to use “Food Grade” castor oil if you decide to go down this route
Bimatoprost
Bimatoprost is a drug used to treat glaucoma but is also currently being used to enhance eyebrow and eyelash length and density as well as scalp hair growth
There are few clinical studies done on beard growth, but it’s thought to increase beard growth through the same mechanisms
This seems to be the case according to anecdotal reports on beard growth subreddits as well as my personal experience
Cetirizine
You probably know Cetirizine as the allergy medicine “Zyrtec” that’s commonly sold over the counter
Clinical trials suggest that cetirizine is effective at increasing hair density, thickness and converting velus hairs to terminal hairs
Again, this is achieved through different mechanisms than minoxidil, castor oil, and bimatoprost, so the idea is to maximize synergy
The downside?
You have to get this from an openminded doctor and a compounding pharmacy willing to make it
There are users on the subreddit r/tressless who have been making their own topical Cetirizine, with seemingly great results
However, I wouldn’t advise anyone to do that
If you decide to go that route, please make sure you have basic math skills & common sense
Testosterone
While we think of it as the “Masculinization hormone”, its cousin DHT or Dihydrotestosterone - a natural byproduct of testosterone, is 100x more masculinizing
(Yes I made that number up, but only because you can’t actually quantify it)
The higher your testosterone is, the more of it will convert to DHT and the more aggression, beard growth, scalp hair loss, and PSA increase you will get
These are not all desirable side effects, so think twice before you consider hopping on TRT for beard growth
Another thing to note is that replacement doses will not get the job done as well as the TRT+ dosages most online clinics prescribe (200mg+)
If you want to make sick muscle and beard gains and don’t mind the potential fertility loss, male pattern baldness, or other side effects, you might have a case for contacting a HRT doctor or TRT clinic
Anyways hope you found this info useful
