Bad decisions will ruin your career and life.
10 mental models that world leaders use to make a decision :
1. Second-Order Thinking
It’s a popular storytelling framework.
You just add, “ and then what ?”
Whenever you make a decision eyeing short-term pleasure, ask this.
More often, if the decision seems hard right now, it will always be good later.
2. Ladder of Inference
Decision-making is like climbing a ladder.
You go through from fact to argument to decision and finally action.
The speed of executing these steps should increase as you move ahead.
3. Reversible v/s Irreversible Decisions
Reversible decisions are low-value decisions.
Like: Should I buy this new shirt?
Irreversible are usually high-value decisions.
Like: Should I move to a new city?
One should be quick and the other slow.
4. Decision Trees
These are very close to mind mapping.
You predict the possible scenarios of all the decisions.
And compare them against each other with Pros and Cons.
5. Devil’s Advocate
A true general knows more about the enemy than his army.
It means you force yourself to look from the opposite viewpoint.
And more likely to spot loopholes in your pillars of decision-making.
6. 80 Y.O and 10 Y.O by @Sahilbloom
Most of our desire stem from our childhood.
Are you taking actions that they are proud of?
But you shouldn’t ignore your 80-year-old self.
Will you be satisfied with the life you've lived?
@SahilBloom 7. Inversion Thinking
Smart people are often the least wrong.
If you just get clarity what you don’t want, It’ll be enough to get ahead of your compititors.
It’s not only good for defining outcome but will also change your daily actions.
@SahilBloom 8. Backward Chaining
Here, You force yourself to define the end goal.
And then work backward to define :
• What do you want to solve?
• Type of tasks and resources you need.
• Daily action that must be done.
It's also great to know if your goal is worth pursuing.
@SahilBloom 9. 10/10/10 Rule
Your mind always chases short-term pleasure.
Often this leads to ignoring the long-term consequences of decisions.
You can change it by asking :
• Would I regret this in 10 min?
• In 10 months?
• In 10 years?
If the answer is no, change your decision.
@SahilBloom 10. The Hard Choice Model
This principle is a great way to find the impact of a decision.
You need to look from 2 different lenses :
• Is it easy from other options?
• How important is the decision?
Then you put them into these 4 categories :
@SahilBloom • No brainer
• Apples/Oranges choice
• Big choice
• Hard choice
See the visual for a better understanding.
