2. The CCI has ordered Google to not require licensing of its Play Store to be linked with mandatory installation of Google apps such as Chrome and YouTube.
3. The CCI also ordered Google to allow removal of all its pre installed apps from phones and give smartphone users the ability to change their search engine provider.
4. As per CCI orders, all apps and games downloaded from the Play Store will also support third-party billing options, allowing developers to skirt Google’s fees on in-app purchases.
5. CCI had fined Google $162 million last October for abusing its “dominant position” in search, video and the web to unfairly disadvantage competitors.
6. Google’s defence
Google says this ruling will lead to proliferation of unchecked apps that will pose threats for individual and national security.
7. “Predatory apps that expose users to financial fraud, data theft and a number of other dangers will be abound on the internet, both from India and other countries.”
8. “While Google holds itself accountable for the apps on Play Store and scans for malware as well as compliance with local laws, the same checks may not be in place for apps sideloaded from other sources.”
9. Google is facing mounting scrutiny from governments across the globe.
It recently lost appeal against a $4.3 billion fine in EU for using the dominance of Android to thwart competition.
Even US Justice Department is suing Google to break up its ad business.
