Most people suck at storytelling
But if you avoid these 7 common mistakes, I promise you won’t:
1.) Not making the reader the hero
The story needs to hook the reader's imagination.
Talking about yourself sucks.
Put the reader in your shoes, and guide them through a problem they're facing.
You are the guide.
The reader is the hero.
The story carries you along.
Next:
2.) Not using details
Be specific
Details establish a deeper connection.
The more details, the more your reader will connect with the story.
Specificity gives credibility.
Be specific by:
•Giving dates
•Portraying scenes
•Expressing emotions
Use a baller intro:
3.) Using a weak introduction
The opening of the story is the most important part
You have to attract the person's attention within 30 seconds.
Make the introduction:
•Different
•Shocking
•Relatable
Ex:
"It was the day my grandmother exploded" - The Crow Road
Tension:
4.) Not creating tension
Create tension in your story by:
The Spark:
Shows what helped overcome the conflict
The Change:
Gives the internal shift that happened for the character to win
The Takeaway:
Summarizes what to do and remember it to overcome the problem
5.) Using too many takeaways
Giving one lesson from a story gives more of an impact.
Multiple lessons make it difficult for the brain to track, & will turn people away.
Do this:
•Create the setup
•Introduce the conflict
•Provide a meaningful solution
Bring change:
6.) Not introducing change
Without change the story is lost
People love the Rags to Riches stories.
The David vs. Goliath stories. Etc.
You have to present the transformation.
This makes the story relatable and highlights that change is necessary to make a difference.
7.) Being negative
Negative stories create fear.
Positive stories create inspiration.
Ending the story on a positive note gives your reader an emotional high.
This emotional high will have them returning to your content again and again.
Simple yet so effective.
I talk about storytelling, business, & mindset
