1. Many companies took advantage of government funds they were supposed to help channel to the needy during the pandemic, says MACC’s Ahmad Khusairi.
“This is the attitude of economic opportunists on a small and medium scale,” the deputy chief commissioner (operations) says.
2. “The value of integrity has faded and greed has become a culture,” Ahmad adds.
He says there were weaknesses in the process of verifying information submitted by applicants, which resulted in several companies being owned by the same person making multiple claims.
3. “There is no use for any fancy policies when the implementation is a failure,” Ahmad says.
He adds that there are no clear laws to take action against applicants such as having them blacklisted, filing civil suits and reclaiming unused funds.
4. The MACC arrested over 130 company owners or directors last year for their alleged involvement in the misappropriation and leakages of funds.
Ahmad says more than 100 companies had been investigated for misappropriation of funds estimated at RM194 million.
