Actor Alan Cumming has returned his OBE over "misgivings" surrounding the "toxicity" of the British Empire.
The Scottish star received the award in 2009 for his activism on equal rights for the gay and lesbian communities in America.
More recently, the Welsh actor Michael Sheen returned the OBE he was awarded in 2009 after reading up on Welsh history and his country’s relationship with the British state.
In 2021, Barbados became the first country in nearly 20 years to cast off the Crown. The prime minister of Antigua and Barbuda also announced in September plans to hold a referendum on whether to remove King Charles III as the head of state.
David Bowie turned down an award naming him a Commander of the Order of the British Empire, or C.B.E., in 2000 because, he explained, “I seriously don’t know what it’s for.”
