Even the most radical Relationism does not mean the players just 'do whatever they want'. This is a misunderstanding of the concept.
Here the short pass is available. The receiver has scanned and gestures for the pass with the right hand. There are connections ahead on the left.
The pass is rejected and the ball is played back. Diniz holds out his hands and leans back in exasperation. Important to note that the preferred receiver is not 'between lines' or 'behind opponent's line of pressure'.
He actually has 2 guys arriving to pressure him from behind.
Braz receives and 'turns out' as if to 'open the play'. Diniz extends left hand and points to the area he wants the play to develop in.
Braz plays into the central zone and Diniz throws his arms out and then slams them down in frustration.
Responding to the coaches actions, the ball is retuned to the left and Braz looks for the forward connections.
Relationism does not mean the players 'do whatever they want.
Relationism refers to the alternative methods of organisation that do not use 'space' and pre-assigned positioning as a primary reference.
The idea that anything outside of the Positionist configuration means 'just do whatever you want' stems from an unfamiliarity with alternative paradigms of football.
