Most hiring managers find Thank You notes helpful when assessing candidates.
But only 24% of job seekers actually write one.
Here’s how to write a job-winning thank you note in 7 simple steps:
1/ Thank You Note Data
68% of hiring managers say thank you notes matter (TopResume).
80% of HR managers stated that thank you notes were helpful when assessing candidates (Robert Half).
Moral of the story?
Send a thank you after every interview!
2/ How To Send Your Thank You
Data shows that employers prefer email over any other medium.
I also love email because its instantaneous.
Hiring happens fast, you want your thank you to reach the hiring team as soon as possible.
3/ Thank Them For Their Time
Your note should start by thanking them for their time.
You'd be surprised at how many people don't actually say "thank you."
Ex:
"Hi [Name],
I wanted to thank you for taking the time to speak with me today! I really enjoyed our conversation."
4/ Recap A Specific Topic
Mention something specific that came up in the interview.
This show the interviewer you paid attention.
Ex:
"Your perspective on LinkedIn’s potential ad integration with Microsoft’s platform was fascinating."
5/ Reiterate Your Excitement
Let them know you're pumped about this role!
Ex:
"I’m very excited about this opportunity, looking forward to hearing more around next steps. If there’s anything I can provide from my end, don’t hesitate to ask!"
6/ How To Personalize It
If you want to layer on the personalization, I love these two options:
1. Use @loom to record a personal thank you video to embed in your email
2. Hand write your note, take a picture of it, and embed it in your email
Personalization goes a long way!
7/ When To Send Your Note
You should get your note out as soon as you can without sacrificing quality.
Within the first 2 hours is best.
By end of day is pretty good.
And sending one late is better than not sending one at all.
8/ Thank You Note Example
Let's put this all into practice.
Here's a thank you note that a candidate might send if they interviewed for a role at Goldman Sachs with someone who loves yoga:
