Probably one of the biggest causes of tension in social, business, and family relationships is the idea there that there has to be a specific, universal "Islamic" dictate for every situation. This usually ends up being something that lives exclusively in people's heads.
Go against what is in their head? You're not "Islamic." Match what is in their head, you are. Insist that custom, culture, & negotiation have a place when broad ethical guidelines are met & you no longer are, despite doing what Islam as faith & law dictate.
The idea of what is "Islamic" deserves more study as a social phenomenon; as a term it barely exists in classical scholarship.
