Ibn Batuta c.1333 writes that Indian Post is called Varid. These were two types - El Wolak and El Davah
1. El Wolak - Dak was carried by horse, the delivery time was 5 days from Multan to Delhi
2. El Davah - Dak was carried by foot runners the delivery time was 50 days

Daks And Dak Chaukis (fixed postal stations) in India were quite distinct from the concept of a Britishers post office.
Britishers suppressed Indian Dak system to establish their monopoly.
The post office served as messenger btw England and India.

Warren Hastings (Governor General of British India from 1773-1784) opened the posts to the public in March 1774.
