Marcel Sabitzer - the all-action midfielder!
In this thread, we'll look at his:
- Qualities (attack & defense)
- Habits (passing)
- Upgrade to #MUFC 's midfield?
- Positional/Role flexibility within the system.
Starting in no particular order, let's take a look at his intercepting ability. With good understanding of play comes the intelligence to predict where the pass will be made and Marcel gets there!
He's predominantly a right footed player but can pick a pass using his left. Even a first-time pass.
The early quick pass can catch the opposition off-guard. An opportunity to score!
Setting the tempo, switching gears suddenly...
Notice how he appears slow, relaxed & harmless (passing side & back) until he quickly makes an incisive pass.
He's also quite good in tight spaces by not taking too long on the ball and finding his teammate quickly or by taking quick soft touches away from the opposition.
He can be a vital cog in ten Hag's counter-pressing scheme. Observe the first play where he quickly closes the player once the ball is lost and regains possession high on the pitch.
Also, watch his recovery, aerial competitiveness, etc
Sabitzer is key to his side's progression.
Look at some of his crisp ground passes through the lines.
Lisandro Martinez is Manchester United's most important player when playing out from the back. Usually seeing the ball more than any, making line breaking passes and he'll love Sabitzer being his partner on that side. Available, constant give and take.
Ball-security, dominating possession. Very good at balancing progression with safe passes (shown especially at Bayern when given a deeper role). ManUtd's midfield has direct and progressive passers which can be nicely neutralized with Sabitzer.
To not pass forward when the option is not available is as important as passing forward because without the ball you can't hurt the opposition.
Sabitzer has played various positions across his career and his pass completion has gradually increased with the deeper role he got.
Defensively, Sabitzer is much better than Eriksen at almost every situation.
Eriksen's final/creative pass will be missed though as he was the leading assister for ManUtd this season.
Sabitzer can bridge that gap to some extent the remaining bit will have to come from the rest.
He's also good at carrying the ball and accelerating with it if needed (not to the extent of a Frenkie but an able carrier). Something, the team has missed through the middle.
End! That is all for now :)
Really appreciate your time, every second of it.

Oh and having played at several positions throughout his career, in case of a crisis, he can cover CF AM CM DM LB RB. Depending on where the absence is. Having played in both high progression and heavy possession styles he can be given different role based on opposition or state.
He’ll give the best of both worlds - Freds engine and Eriksen’s passing.
His shooting technique will come handy in deadlock situations as well. He used to play as a forward.
