1 of the mightiest characters of the rAmAyaNa was the ape vAlin. Among his great acts were the slaying of the dAnava-s dundubhi & mAyAvin &mighty gandharva golabha after a continuous 16 year battle. An account this was recited by the apes in the funerary elegy to their great lord

पुष्पौघेण+अनुबद्धन्ते करिष्यति तद् अद्य कः ।
येन दत्तम् महद्-युद्धं गन्धर्वस्य महात्मनः ॥
Streams of flowers would hug him [in his leap]; now who can do that?
He who gave great battle to the mighty gandharva,

गोलभस्य महाबाहुर् दश वर्षाणि पञ्च च ।
नैव रात्रौ न दिवसे तत् युद्धम् उपशाम्यति ॥
known as golabha of mighty arms for fifteen years.
Neither during the night nor during the day did the fight cease.

ततः षोडशमे वर्षे गोलभो विनिपातितः ।
तं हत्वा दुर्विनीतं तु वाली दंष्ट्र-करालवान् ।
सर्वा अभयंकरः अस्माकं कथम् एष निपातितः ॥
Then in the sixteenth year golabha was felled.
He, difficult to be subjugated, was slain by vAlin of fierce fangs.

He who gave all of us fearlessness, how could he be felled?
