and it was becoming impossible to distinguish who was on which side, then on behalf of Akbar, Badayuni, who was fighting, asked his general Asaf Khan that at whom should he fire so that only the enemy gets hurt.

Commander Asaf Khan replied that it was not very important who gets shot. Because all those who fight (from both sides) are infidels (Ka-fir) whoever gets shot will die an infidel, which will only benefit “eSLAM”.
So they kept firing while Hindus were fighting eachother.
