Aramark, a school food vendor, was forced to apologize for serving chicken and waffles on the first day of Black history month. Company executives will undergo racial sensitivity reeducation. Are chicken & waffles racist?

When I read about the issue I replied, "Honestly, I don’t know any white people who don’t like chicken and waffles. When did it become a racist food pairing?" In response, @SonMemphis claimed it had been weaponized against the people who popularized it.

I decided to look into the restaurant @SonMemphis mentioned. Turns out Roscoe's was founded by Herb Hudson in Long Beach in 1975 and is President Obama's favorite chicken & waffles restaurant.

Many people assume chicken & waffles originated as 'soul food' but in reality, the dish can trace its roots to the Pennsylvania territory in the 1700s. NPR debunked the theory that the dish is a southern and/or soul dish.

Finally, to @SonMemphis, I still don't understand what you meant when you claimed chicken & waffles has been "weaponized against the people who popularized it" but I am curious to learn more. Help me understand.

Ironically, Roscoe’s Chicken ’N Waffles was sued by its only black employee for discrimination and was forced to pay $1M after its all-Latino management treated him unfairly in order to favor other Latino workers. la.eater.com

@fran_mac75 made a good point that providing 'cultural' menus on days of remembrance is a time-honored tradition (not that I think waffles & chicken is cultural). For example, is it racist to serve an Italian menu on Columbus Day? Indian during Diwali?
