Shark Anupam Mittal calls UHI the next big revolution after UPI
What UPI did for payments, UHI will do for healthcare in India
Here’s how it will boost digital health services in India:
There is great disparity in quality of healthcare services being delivered across India.
Rural areas often suffer and don’t have access to adequate healthcare compared to affluent areas.
Most rural areas don’t even have Primary Health Centers available.
That’s where the govt’s new initiative — National Digital Health Ecosystem (NDHE) comes in.
It will play an important role in our healthcare ecosystem and help bridge this ACCESSIBILITY gap.
It will make use of extant digital public goods such as Aadhaar, UPI, DigiLocker, etc.
The digital registries of health providers and facilities, unique Aadhaar-like health ID, and universal access to healthcare have come live under NDHE.
Healthcare startups will integrate with the digital sandbox of the NDHE and enable easy onboarding of patients and providers.
Unified Health Interface (UHI) is one of the building blocks within the NDHE — an open-source protocol (just like UPI) for digital health services.
It is a nationwide, decentralized, open, secure, and inclusive network with the objective of enabling:
INTEROPERABILITY of health-related data and interaction between the patients and providers of digital health services,
AND
STANDARDIZATION of processes such as identification, verification, health claims, and formatting of health records.
Now, this will further enable a wide variety of digital health services between patients and health service providers such as:
1. DISCOVERY of hospitals, labs, or pharmacies.
2. BOOKING physical appointment, teleconsultation, or ambulance.
3. GETTING treatment or medicines.
UHI will lay the foundation of a more open, efficient marketplace, where demand and supply for these services can be matched seamlessly with minimal information asymmetry.
This will solve two integral challenges that our healthcare ecosystem is currently plagued with — TRUST AND AWARENESS.
Firstly, the data transparency will help reinforce trust among the patient and the provider —
the lack of which previously hindered a patient’s ability to make informed decisions and choose what’s best for them.
Secondly, India has a low adoption of digital healthcare services because of lack of awareness of diseases or knowledge of options for screening and treatment —
which could mean the difference between life and death, as is the case with a disease like cancer.
UHI will be successful if it is able to drive adoption of digital services, and its database is accepted as the source of truth throughout the country.
Apart from these, there are several TECHNICAL challenges that hinder good healthcare and UHI can help overcome these.
E.g. Most patients have their reports in fragmented paper documents which are not easy to share digitally– except perhaps as photos.
This may not render a clear picture for a doctor being consulted through digital means which may affect the quality of care given to the patient.
Now, with the help of UHI:
Patients can save the digital health records into their Health Lockers and share these with any doctor easily by providing consent to the doctor to view the records.
And doctors will be able to view the health records across all hospitals/doctors to provide a detailed second opinion for any patient from anywhere in the country.
Speaking of health records (data), both privacy and medical research have high value to society.
Medical research is crucial for improving drugs, vaccines, medical devices, and diagnostics for individuals who need them.
Now, unlike the UPI payments which are free, govt will include a fee for the usage of the UHI gateway.
However, it’s financial model is still underway.
COVID pandemic has brought to light the importance of digital health services like booking appointments for vaccination, finding the availability of a critical care bed and oxygen cylinders, etc.
UHI is a stepping stone to provide a major boost to DIGITAL HEALTHCARE in India 🇮🇳
