Key Talking Points of the Thread
1️⃣Passing
2️⃣Defending
3️⃣Dribbling
4️⃣Positoning
1️⃣Passing
Kone is a good passer. He has a nice passing range, he likes to play mid range switches from deep positions.
Also picking the ball from the CBs, playing neat passes into attacking players. He prefers to progress the ball via carrying, but can progress via passes
By having a look at his stats we can see he is a very capable passer
Below are his 22/23 and 21/22 stats, the prior year he had a fantastic year. His stats this year aren’t bad however last year there was more of a reliance on him in build up. I think Erik would demand of him
Kone can play the DLP role
📹1: drops deep to receive off the CB, one quick look up before spraying a dangerous over the top pass
📹2: again in a similar position, receives the ball deep before progressing the ball wide to create extra width in the attack
Kone can also contribute in attacking areas, playing in pockets in the half spaces to connect with others around him
His skill/strength in tight areas allow him to trick his way into good positions, showing good weight of pass to play team mates through on goal
Kone is a very intelligent player. His vision is so good & his weight of pass in short areas is excellent. I think that’s why he can play the DLP role so well, his ability to play the right pass accurately
Sometimes when he has a bit more thinking time, he can lack composure
2️⃣Defending
Manu Kone is a very effective defender. He is a fantastic presser of the ball, using his fantastic athleticism to close players down
His physicality is a massive part of his game, often outmuscling players & using his long legs to win the back through his tackling
His tackling stats are fantastic. His work rate in defence is brilliant but the timing of his tackles are also brilliant
He has the speed/physicality to match runners but also the patience to stand up 1v1 against dribblers, choosing the right time to execute the tackle
📹1: rapidly covers the ground before a superb tough tackle to set the counter attack up
📹2: he shows fantastic maturity here, backtracking to allow his team mates to get back for back up support. Once they arrive, he times the tackle fantastically
📹1: Kone is an elite presser. His speed/physicality plus his timing of when to press allow him to win the ball back constantly
📹2: his positioning is excellent here, playing a dual pressing role. Times his press/tackle wonderfully
He ranks in the 84th% for ball recoveries
3️⃣Dribbling
Manchester United require an elite dribbler in the midfield, it’s why they’ve chased Frenkie de Jong
Dribbling is a key facet of play. Being able to drop deep to collect the ball, evade pressing & dribble through the 3rds to progress the ball. It’s a profile we lack
Kone is an elite dribbler. He has a low centre of gravity which allows him to change direction quickly
His body shape/running style allows him to have quick movement/ability to drop the shoulder. In the 99th% for completed dribbles p90, elite. You can’t get better than that
📹1: he is an elite 1st phase dribbler. Stands his man up, jinks by him using good body movement. The speed is frightening, long strides to get away from the opponent and wins a foul
📹2: Plays the initial pass before his dribble takes away 3/4 players to get into the final 3rd
📹1: receives the ball in the LHS, a few feints/movements to create space for him to move into. Again wins the foul in an advanced area
📹2: takes a heavier touch to get by his opponent, that’s intentional. Smart. The speed again is really good before a beautiful weight of pass
Kone can often drag his team up the pitch via dribbling but his ability to win fouls is underrated, he ranks in the 99th% for fouls won
In pressure scenarios, being able to dribble/win fouls removes pressure off the team, can allow for resets and slows the game down
4️⃣Positioning
Kone has the ability to drop deep during build up. He loves to get the ball to try dribble into the middle 3rd before progressing the ball wide
He is improving at being the controller. He can scan the pitch, looking for forward passes. He likes a switch
I also think Kone is a good option for the attacking areas. He likes to play in the LHS, using his dribbling ability to dance through defenders
He links well with players in advanced areas plus is a good ball striker. I’d want more goals and assists from him as our 8
Kone is 6ft 1, really strong and athletic. His physicality would allow him to integrate into the premier league easier
He has played in both Bundesliga/Ligue 1 at a young age, coping with the physicality well. His speed/stamina would help him adapt to the speed of the game
His contract is up in 2025, at only 21 with so much room for development I think Gladbach would command a high fee. They purchased Kone for £8m, I think they’ll be looking 6/7x that price
A fee of around £50/£60m I would expect would be required to break Gladbach’s resolve
Summary
- Kone is a really good prospect. His physical attributes make him excellently suited to the premier league
- he has thrived in two leagues. Showing his good adaptability
- for a young player he is so brave on and off the ball. He has the courage to play for United
- he’s an excellent presser. He would really suit what Erik demands off the ball
- on the ball I think he does need to improve in some areas, but I think the potential is there
- his ball carrying ability is phenomenal
- one of the better price options. Around £50m
