I led design at 7 startups raising over $30M in funding.
How I build design strategies for growth from 0-1 (a guide for startups).

Reminder: Design strategy should be done WITH your Head of Product and Head of Ops vs presented to them.
This creates buy-in and alignment on why this is important from Day 1.
Design strategy IS NOT a roadmap.
Design strategy IS WHY you will create value.
It sets the foundation for how the company will create and deliver value to customers.
1. Understand your customer:
Conduct research to gain insights into their needs, pain points, and goals.
How do they get news?
What do they need solved urgently?
What are they willing to pay & how much?
2. Review competitive landscape:
Do tear downs.
Understand leading value props.
Interview users of your competition to understand what’s working, what’s not.
Know who the players are and where they play vs where you will play.
3. Actualize your value:
It defines the unique benefit that your product or service provides to customers.
Clear
Compelling
Easy to understand.
Define your value proposition before you start designing. Study how others do it.
4. Establish design principles:
Guidelines ensures consistency in design.
Ex: Stay out of the way: No unnecessary blocks or steps for users.
Ex: Provide context: Communicate big picture to users.
It speeds up design decisions aligned with strategy. (@ilikescience)
5. Learn and iterate:
Design is a living thing. Just like a human it learns and grows as new pieces of information from customers, product and market.
Always test, learn and improve.
TLDR/
Design strategy IS NOT roadmap.
Design strategy IS WHY you will create value.
1. Understand Customer
2. Review Competition
3. Actualize Value
4. Establish principles
5. Learn and iterate
