I'm a Deloitte CTO and I've hired 100s of people in my 15-year career.
There's one thing that sets a candidate apart in an interview:
Asking questions.
Here are the best 7 questions you should ask your future employer:
I always say you cannot ace an interview without preparing for it.
When the interviewer asks you if you have any questions to ask him, the biggest mistake is to say "No."
Candidates who ask questions show they are really interested if they are the right fit for the role.
1/ What qualities should the ideal candidate possess?
You want to know what qualities your potential employer values in its employees.
She might say:
• passion
• problem-solving
• continuous learner
If you're none of these, then it's not a good fit.
2/ What are the opportunities for growth?
You don't want to work in the same role for 5 years, do you?
• mentoring programs
• mobility opportunities
• MBA-like management cohorts
Choose a company that's committed to growing and developing employees.
3/ What are the challenges of this role?
An employer will try to tell you only the fun parts. But they won't lie when you ask them.
• a demanding client
• hard to achieve targets
• a rigid organizational structure
You need to know if you can manage them.
3b/ (Bonus question)Why did the previous person leave?
If the role is not new and you're replacing someone, it would be great to know why that guy left.
4/ How will success look in the next 30/90/365 days?
Let's say you got the job. You should know what they expect from you in the first year.
• new skills
• collaboration
• transformation
Knowing your company's expectations can help you decide if it's the right fit for you
5/ What are the biggest strengths and weaknesses of my team?
The chances are that you will not be the company's first hire.
You will either work in a team or be assigned to lead one.
• What sets them apart?
• Who is the informal leader?
• What challenges are they facing?
6/ What challenges is the company currently facing?
You did your homework, so you already know this from the outside.
But you want to hear how it looks from the inside:
• staying competitive
• inefficient processes
• decreased customer satisfaction
How can you contribute?
7/ What do you enjoy most about your job at this company?
It's time to get in the driver's seat and find out what stands out to someone who already works there.
• work-life balance
• focus on innovation
• career opportunities
How important are these to you?
TL;DR: 7 questions you should ask your future employer
1/ What qualities should the ideal candidate possess?
2/ What are the opportunities for growth?
3/ What are the challenges of this role?
3b/ (Bonus question)Why did the previous person leave?
