Amazing story from @eugyppius1. I Frickin Love Actual Science threadreaderapp.com
A few thoughts, in no particular order:
1. Only an autistic male could have obsessed over such an apparently intractable problem, come up with the experiments to answer various questions, narrow down the properties of the pathogen, etc.
2. It reminds me of the classical theistic arguments for the existence of God: Beijerinck never saw a virus infect a cell, but he was forced to deduce, from a number of observations, that there had to exist something, with the following properties, and he called it a virus.
Of course, this is how science often proceeds, through deduction rather than indirect observation, and only midwits who don't understand science think that this is somehow an illegitimate means of advancing human knowledge.
* rather than direct observation 🙄
