Do you have unexplained SERP volatility?
πŸ˜… Here are reasons WHY
πŸ€‘ & HOW to investigate it
(( feedback needed below πŸ§΅πŸ‘‡ ))
Google SERP results can change for no apparent reason!!
1⃣First, check if you made any changes?
- you held the top spot
- you didn't change anything
- no updates
- no technical errors
- link profile consistent
But suddenly you see a drop in rank and traffic?!
If you lost a ranking then someone took your spot!
2⃣ Have consumers just stopped searching for that topic?
I doubt it...
If you lost SERP rank for no reason then maybe others did too??
3⃣ Check if more than one site lost rank.
Reasons the SERP changed??
- adjusted intent
- changed expected content type
- re-calibrate 'quality' or 'eat'
- or.....
🎯In my case, several of my queries went from national search terms to hyper geo-specific terms.
So what changed??
Google's personalization basically added "in Y":
✨ "Best X" became "Best X in Y"
✨ "How to X" became "How to X in Y"
This effectively becomes a cannibalization issue because now I have two pages that rank for "Best X"
1) The national page that ranked for "Best X" that now shows for personalization
2) The geo-specific page I was originally ranking for "Best X in Y"
HELP WANTED: Script ideas...
- Do you use a LOCAL rank tracker?
- How do you identify SERP intent in bulk?
- Do you track ranking factors?
- How to cluster 50k+ keywords?
- When do you decide what KW a page targets?
- When to split a page into a new page?

....this sparked some good DMs, thank you!
FOR CLARIFICATION:
πŸ˜‰volatility - liability to change rapidly and unpredictably, especially for the worse.
πŸ˜‡volitivity - a certain action is willed, although it may not be performed in fact.
