Freemasonry & the Kabbalah (🧵) 33° Freemason Albert Pike claimed, "The true philosophy, known and practiced by Solomon, is the basis on which Masonry is founded." So, what is this Philosophy? "According to Talmudic legends, Solomon understood the mysteries of the Qabbalah."
Pike continues, "Kabalah is the KEY of the Occult Sciences." While Honorary Co-Mason and Founder of the Theosophical Society Helena P. Blavatsky agrees, "The Kabalah is indeed of the essence of Freemasonry." F. De P. Castelle adds, "Freemasonry is kabbalism in another garb."
C.W. Leadbeater concluded, "There is much in Kabbalah which brings light upon our sermons and symbols and a study of Kabbalic theosophy may be both profit and interest to a Mason."
What is Kabbalah, you may ask? Pike explains it as "Ten ciphers and twenty-two letters, a triangle, a square, and a circle, these are all the elements of the Kabalah. These are the elementary principles of the written Word, reflection of that spoken Word that created the Word."
Albert Mackey explains, "The Cabala may be defined to be a system of philosophy which embraces certain mystical interpretations of Scripture, of metaphysical & spiritual beings. Much use is made of it in the advanced degrees, entire Rites have been constructed on its principles."
Pike said, "It taught the doctrine of the Unity of G-d, the art of knowing and explaining the essence and operations of the Supreme Being, of spiritual powers and natural forces, and of determining their action by symbolic figures; by the arrangement of the alphabet & numbers."
Where did the Kabbalah come from? Pike explains, "The Kabbalah is the key of the occult sciences; and the Gnostics were born of the Kabbalists, the main tradition of single revelation was preserved under the name ‘Kabbalah’ by the Israeli Priests."
"Early initiates of the Qabbalistic Mysteries believed that its principles were first taught by G-d to a school of His angels before the fall of man. The angels later communicated the secrets to Adam The Angel Raziel was dispatched from heaven to instruct Adam in the mysteries."
"Different angels were employed to initiate the succeeding patriarchs in this difficult science. Tophiel was the teacher of Shem, Raphael of Isaac, Metatron of Moses, and Michael of David."
Christian D. Ginsburg added, "From Adam it passed over to Noah, and then to Abraham, the friend of G-d, who emigrated with it to Egypt, where the patriarch allowed a portion of this mysterious doctrine to ooze out. It was this way the Egyptian obtained some Knowledge of it."
"Moses, who was learned in all the wisdom of Egypt, was initiated into it in the land of his birth, but became proficient in it during his wandering in the wilderness, when he not only devoted to it the leisure hour of 40 years, but received lessons in it from one of the angels."
"Moses also initiated the seventy Elders into the secrets of this doctrine and they again transmitted them from hand to hand. Of all who formed the unbroken line of tradition, David and Solomon were most initiated into the Kabbalah."
A Key Concept of Kabbalah is the Sephirothic Tree or the Tree of Life: Ten Sephiroths (Emanations) & 22 Paths or Creative Forces showing G-d's Glory. As Paul Foster Case explains, "Masonry cannot be fully appreciated or understood without knowledge of the Qabalist Tree of Life."
Nowadays, the Kabbalah is often characterized as Jewish Mysticism but to do this is to miss the prolific Symbolic Syncretism All Around the World. Éliphas Lévi wrote that the Kabbalah was the core doctrine of real Christianity, the true teachings of the “universal tradition”.
Unfortunately, as Pike explains, "The truth must be kept secret, & the masses need a teaching proportioned to their imperfect reason." Freemasonry, like the Kabbalah, has an Exoteric and Esoteric System. Only in the Higher Degrees does the Language of Symbolism become revealed.
C.W. Leadbeater concluded, “The skeleton of this body of doctrine (Kabbalah) has reached us in the symbolism of Freemasonry, and in Kabbalah we may find a clue to much that is obscure in our modern rituals." 🧵🔚
